For centuries, all our spiritual traditions have told us to avoid focusing on accumulation of material goods. The familiar “Sermon on the Mount,” based on the theme from Matthew 16:26 “For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul?” is rarely heard today. In the last half of the 20th century, particularly the last 25 years, the West has rejected these traditions and adopted the religion of growth economics, the fundamental principle being that if everyone pursues his or her own self interest, then society will benefit. ~George Monbiot
